Riga, an attractive city with rich traditions, unique culture, great museums and extensive architecture.

The capital of Latvia with its more than 800 years history perfectly combines the heritage of medieval times and the advantages of modern epoque. The largest city of the country and an important seaport, Riga is considered to be the major commercial, industrial and cultural centre of the Baltic states.

Riga stands on the river Daugava separating it into Vecriga (Old Riga) and Pardaugava. The two banks are connected by four bridges. The river is famous for its ancient strategic location known as the Amber Way. Today amber still washes up on Latvian beaches and it’s sold in all souvenir shops.

Riga's historical centre has been declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and the city is particularly notable for its German Art Nouveau architecture, which UNESCO considers to be unparalleled anywhere in the world.

Latvia has many opportunities for boating, walking, enjoying the outdoors. There are many small medieval towns, country castles, museums and folk parks to be visited.

Climate

It is moderately warm and humid. The average temperature in February is about –5 C. Snowfall is common in winter.

Language

The official language is Latvian. It is an Indo-European language and is similar only to Lithuanian. Russian, English and German are widely spoken.

There are railway connections with all neighbouring countries. The main route from western Europe runs to Riga from Berlin via Warsaw and Vilnius.
